Here’s a list of Franchise Resale Brokers that may help you as you explore your options:

#1 – Lead PPC / Lead FSO

Our approach is a bit unique.  We typically have about 100 franchise brands that we advertise on behalf of on the franchise development side of things.  And, we usually have another 10-12 brands that we are the FSO (Franchise Sales Organization) for.  More and more, we’ve been working with these brands to help with franchise resales as their preferred franchise resale broker.

For us, our approach is simple.  And, this approach comes from 15+ years of running ads online for franchisors seeking to sell franchises.  It also comes from myself selling several of my own franchises and knowing what it’s like trying to exit a franchise.

We typically recommend spending about $2,000 / mo. on Meta Ads as well as a BizBuySell listing.  Typically, that will drive enough leads to work off of to get the business sold.  With my own businesses that I sold, it typically took me 3-5 months to sell them.  That’s more time than I wanted, but I was able to get them sold.  Also, once you find the buyer, you can go ahead and turn off the ads.  So, you might only spend money on ads for 2-3 months, find the buyer, and then shut them off.

There are a lot of nuances to the landing pages, pricing, EBITDA multiple, etc. that make a difference.

Franchise Resale Brokers

#2 – BizBuySell

This one is more of a platform than anything else.  But, it’s probably the #1 platform used by franchise resale brokers.  If you list your business here, you are very likely to get inquiries from people who are interested in purchasing your franchise from you.  We use it quite a bit here internally.

#3 – National Franchise Sales

These guys have been around since 1978 and helped sell 92,000,000 worth of businesses.  They have a robust team that can handle all sizes of franchise resales as well as most transaction types (such as Distressed Business Solutions, Bankruptcy and Turnaround, and Protecting Value to minimize loss).  If you’re serious about selling your franchise, having a conversation with National Franchise Sales is worth highly recommended.

#4 – Alpine Business Brokers

Alpine Business Brokers is out of Utah (hence the name “Alpine”).   They are smaller, but you can view their active business listings online.  Most of their efforts are focused on the Utah market specifically.  If you happen to be selling a business that resides in the state of Utah, this would be a good group to look into.

#5 – First Choice Business Brokers

One thing that is cool about First Choice Business Brokers is that they have a pretty aesthetically pleasing website that shows some of the top businesses for sale right there on the homepage.

Franchise Sales

As a franchise system grows, inevitably some franchisees will have the desire to exit and sell their franchise.  Sometimes this is because the franchise isn’t super profitable and they want out.  Sometimes the business is profitable but it requires more time and work than the franchisee wants to put into it.  For some brick and mortar franchises, sometimes franchisees are staring down the barrel of signing another 5 to 10 year lease and they don’t want to obligate themselves for that.  Or, in many cases franchisees just want to sell their business to take profits or retire.

For myself, I sold 2 of my franchises because they were geographically too far from where I live and hard to operate so I just wanted out.  So, I’ve been there myself (it turns out I’m much better at marketing and selling franchises than running them).

We run franchise resale campaigns for many of our clients’ brands.  So, here’s a list of the Top Franchise Resales Sites we’ve found:

Top Franchise Sales Sites

#1 – Outbound Text Messaging

This one is less of a “site” and more of a strategy.  When I sold my cookie store in Indianapolis, I did it by using the outbound SMS texting service of my POS Square.  Basically, instead of sending out a text message about that week’s cookies, I sent out a text message about Franchise Opportunities available in that local area.  I included a picture of a franchisee standing outside the store of one of the cookie stories and kept it generic so that it didn’t explicitly say that I was selling my store.  I only had 3 people fill out the form on the landing page that I drove people to.  But, one of them purchased my cookie store for $314,000.  Best text message I ever sent out.

I firmly believe that sending out a solid text message to your existing customer base that already knows and loves your brand is the cheapest, easiest way to sell your franchise.  There are some nuances to what to write in the text message and on the landing page.  If you have questions on it, feel free to reach out and I can walk you through the script that I’ve used for myself and clients.

#2 – Meta Ads

This is where I would recommend putting most of your budget.  Usually, you’ll want to spend somewhere between about $1,000 – $2,000 / mo. on ads for a period of about 2-6 months.  If the franchise must be owned and operated locally, then you’ll want to keep your budget a bit lower at around $1,000 / mo.  Otherwise, you’ll burn through your local audience too quickly.

If you have more of an absentee model that someone can own and operate from anywhere, then you should crank it up a bit to around $2,000 / mo. since it’s probably unlikely or impossible to burn through an audience.  Going much higher than $2,000 / mo. is usually cost prohibitive because you don’t want to eat into your profits from selling the business too much.

Again, make sure you have a good landing page where people can fill out a form to give you their Name, Email, and Phone Number.  Confirming that they have enough liquid capital / net worth to buy the franchise is also not a bad idea.

#3 – BizBuySell

Most franchise portals are absolute junk in my opinion.  It’s hard enough to sell franchises from semi-qualified lead sources such as Google Ads and Meta Ads.  But, if it usually takes 50-100 qualified leads from Meta Ads or Google Ads to sell a franchise, then you’re typically looking at 200-400 leads from franchise portals to sell a franchise.

BizBuySell is different, however.  Usually on a franchise sale / resale you’re only going to get a handful of leads.  But, most of those people will have done their research, they like your opportunity, and they’re genuinely interested in having a conversation and discussing the opportunity.

Be prepared to share with them your P&L and basic financial information.  While all franchise sales are an emotional purchase, BizBuySell leads tend to be much more interested in the ROI as they evaluate the opportunity.

#4 – National Franchise Sales

This site is pretty cool.  It’s a bit like BizBuySell or Craigslist.  They have a Listings Directory that you can post your franchise sales opportunity on.  The site gets quite a bit of traffic and is pretty simple.

I’d recommend playing around with it and looking at the posts of businesses that have already sold so you get an idea of what the general vibe is and how you can make your business listing stand out.

#5 – Franchise Resales

This site is pretty similar to National Franchise Sales.  The interface is a bit different, but it’s a directory specifically for people looking to sell or buy franchise resales.  On the franchise development side of things, we run into prospective franchisee candidates regularly who decide not to move forward because of how much of a pain it is to build out a brick and mortar store.

Experienced business owners oftentimes hunt on sites like Franchise Resales to find underpriced, solid opportunities that they can either grow or flip by taking that business to the next level.

#6 – Google Ads

Lead volume will be the challenge here.  But, it’s possible to run ads on Google Ads locally that will show up for people who are looking for exactly what you are selling.  For instance, I could have ran some ads in Indiana for people that were searching for:

• Cookie Store Franchise
• Cookie Store Business
• How To Start A Cookie Store

I would probably recommend doing Google Search only campaigns around the match types [Exact] and “Phrase”, trying to stay away from Broad Match.  I would also avoid Google PMax (Performance Max) campaigns and Display Campaigns.  Those are an easy way to spend a lot of money and drive junk traffic.  We try to avoid PMax campaigns like the plague.

#7 – Franchise Direct

My experience has been that there’s a pretty big dip in performance from BizBuySell to other franchise portals.  But, of the remaining ones, Franchise Direct is still probably better than most of the others.

I’d still probably put my money into Meta Ads over Franchise Direct, but if you’re used to franchise portals, you could try giving them a call and seeing if they would do a listing for a franchise resale.  Usually, they like more “evergreen” offers where franchisors are generically selling a franchise opportunity, but occasionally franchisees are able to either work with the franchisor or with portals to figure something out to help get leads around that franchise resale opportunity.

#8 – Indeed

Again, this one is more of a resource.  But, sites like Indeed might be worth looking at and seeing if there’s someone locally who is a Business Broker who can help you sell your franchise.

#9 – Internicola

This is a website that I frequent regularly.  The main page that I go to is actually this one called “How to Find Franchise Disclosure Documents“.  I go there and then click on the Wisconsin state link and download FDDs for various brands to see how many units they have, what their sales revenue and gross profits look like, etc.

This is a good resource to look at so that you understand some of the legal nuances of selling your franchise.  Most likely, you’ll need to retain a lawyer of some sort to help make sure that there’s nothing funky in the deal.  Remember that oftentimes it’s going to be an Asset Purchase Agreement as opposed to selling your entity itself.  Most buyers prefer to just buy your equipment, assume your leases, and take over the Franchise Agreement rather than buy a business that might have a bunch of legal problems or law suits that they would be liable for.

#10 – Fast Lane

While hiring an FSO to sell a single franchised location does make a ton of sense, Fast Lane has some really good articles and resources on their website that are worth taking a look at so that you have a better understanding of the industry as a whole and the mindset of what it takes to sell franchises.

If you’re viewing this page, you’re probably hunting for a new SEO vendor for your franchise system or individually as a franchisee.  If you look online with Google, what you’ll find is a bunch of generic SEO companies that rank highly for all sorts of SEO terms, but they don’t actually have much experience within the franchising space.

As a vendor within the franchising industry for 15+ years, here’s our take on the top vendors within the space that actually work with franchises and know what they’re doing in regard to Franchise SEO:

Top Franchise SEO Companies

#1 – Ninth Root

If you are a franchisor or a franchisee within a system that has multiple locations and you want to drive more business for your local franchisees, we would highly recommend having a discussion with Ninth Root.  The upside is that they have one of the lowest attrition rates and highest satisfaction rates within the industry.  Why?  Because their strategies work and drive a lot of business organically for franchisees.  The downside is that like several other vendors SEO franchise vendors, they have their own proprietary Content Management System (CMS).  So, if you’re an avid WordPress user and that’s a non-negotiable for you, then Ninth Root will not be a good fit.

#2 – Scorpion

Scorpion has long been known as an agency with beautiful designs and a strong organizational structure.  They are a very business savvy group of people that have acquired many smaller agencies in order to expedite growth.  While they were originally known for doing good work in the Law Firm and Dental spaces, they acquired agencies such as Wheat Creative that have a strong backbone and reputation within the franchise marketing arena, and they’ve acquired a large marketshare of companies who need help with Franchise SEO & PPC.  The upside with them would be beautiful designs.  The downside would be that they too use their own CMS and you will be tied to their website infrastructure.

#3 – Lead PPC

I’m going to put ourselves as 3rd on this list.  We’re primarily known for Franchise Development PPC, FSO Services, and local consumer ads via PPC.  However, our SEO skills have continued to grow.  We would be a good choice if you need help with Franchise Development PPC and SEO.  But, if you’re just looking for Franchise SEO services, we’re probably not a great fit.

#4  – Top Fire Media

Although we compete against Top Fire Media quite a bit on the franchise development lead generation side of things, they are an agency whose approach I have come to respect and appreciate as a near peer in the industry.  If you’re evaluating various franchise marketing related services, this is a group that is definitely worth having a conversation with.

#5 – C Squared

C Squared is another name that we hear our clients use for organic traffic.  While C Squared isn’t your traditional SEO company, they do provide Organic Social services.  If you’re a home service franchise, this probably isn’t what you need, as many home service franchises do better with Google / Bing SEO strategies.  However, many retail franchise brands or QSR franchises, might benefit greatly from an Organic Social strategy.  If so, this would be an agency work taking a look at.

#6 – Ignite Visibility

Ignite Visibility is an agency that we hear about occasionally.  Our clients say that they’ve had some ups and downs (as many agencies do).  But, they are a full-service agency that has a broad reach and a heavy emphasis on the franchising space.  It’s our understanding that they don’t go as far as selling franchises on behalf of their clients, but they do work with both franchisors and local franchisees from an SEO and paid media vantage point.

#7 – SOCi

I’m going to through SOCi in the mix next.  One thing that I like about SOCi is that they’ve gone all in on using AI Agents.  I think that these will become more important and popular when it comes to landing page conversion rates, especially with deeper funnels.  One of the big probems with doing sales online is the jump between a web form lead to a live call.  Some local home service businesses don’t deal with this as much because people would rather all and get a service taken care of immediately.  But, when it comes to other types of franchises, having an AI Agent book an appointment or help guide you along the franchise experience or even hold a call for you and do a live transfer from an AI Agent to a sales rep is a powerful, up and coming approach that you will see more of in the future.

#8 – Neil Patel

As far as SEO Influencers go, Neil Patel is probably the best that I’m aware of.  What started as more of a Frank Kern / Ryan Deiss / Dan Kennedy type of information marketing approach has turned into a huge, dynamic SEO agency that is spread internationally throughout the world.  These guys produce some of the best content that ranks high for many, many brands including those within the franchising space.  It’s hard to mention SEO in general without mentioning Neil Patel.

#9 – HigherVisibility

These guys get confused sometimes with Ignite, but they are actually two totally different companies that both provide Franchise SEO services.  I’d say that a major area of emphasis for HigherVisibility is probably Google My Business / Google Maps listings.  They also use SEMRUSH quite extensively to make sure that your SEO rankings are in tip top shape.

#10 – Thrive

What is Franchise SEO?

Franchise SEO is a blanketed term that can mean a few different things.  Most commonly, “Franchise SEO” refers to franchise development SEO.  The goal of franchise development SEO is to generate high quality leads of candidates that are interested in purchasing a franchise.

In general, franchise development SEO leads are the highest quality leads that you can drive via the internet.  Internally, we have found that franchise SEO leads have a contact rate of around 66%, which is about twice as high as franchise leads driven via PPC mediums such as Google Ads or Meta Ads.  And, franchise SEO leads typically have around a 4X higher chance of converting into a franchise sale than PPC leads.

Having said all of this, franchise PPC leads have a contact rate of around 33%, which is still about 10X higher than that of portal leads.  Franchise portal leads have a contact rate of about 3%, which makes it extremely difficult to close deals from franchise portals, especially if you are only selling 1 brand.  If you’re a franchise broker, then franchise portals leads are just about all that you can find.

Having looked at a decent amount of their work, one of the things that they do better than most franchise marketing agencies is that they are pretty good at Meta Ads PPC advertising for franchisors.  I wouldn’t say that their landing pages are all that great as often times they use the built-in Lead Ads functions, but some of their audience selection is impressive.

If you couple Meta Ads PPC franchise advertising along with some targeted franchise SEO services, then you’re probably in a good boat in general with Top Fire Media.  And, they’re not just a generic agency that says that they do franchise marketing.  They live and breathe it and they’re well known in the franchising industry.

#4 – Scorpion

I’m going to go with Scorpion as our #4 franchise SEO marketing company.  A few years back they purchased Wheat Creative, and they were at the time probably the #1 or #2 franchise SEO firm.  Although Scorpion works in a lot of different industries such as Dental, Law Firms, etc. they have a relatively large book of business within the franchising space, including SEO.

The thing about Scorpion to just be aware of going into it is that they do have a habit of doing 2 things that bug some customers:

1. Content Management System (CMS) – Scorpion has their own CMS that most of their clients use.  Their designs are REALLY REALLY GOOD.  But, if you ever want to leave their CMS and move to a platform like WordPress, it’s very difficult to do so.  From our perspective WordPress is the best SEO platform, so to not have your site built in WordPress is kind of a big deal.  Having said that, Scorpion has a ton of clients that do just fine using their in-house CMS.
2. Google Ads Accounts – Scorpion is notorious for not allowing customers to keep their Google Ads accounts.  At least in the past, many clients we have worked with were not able to get their Google Ads accounts back because multiple clients would share the same Google Ads accounts.  On the flip side, by running lots of clients out of the same Google Ads accounts, they do get a lower Cost Per Click and lower Cost Per Lead.  So, the strategy actually works, but some would say it’s against Google’s TOS and we hear a lot of clients that leave them get a bit bugged by it.

All things considered though, Scorpion is one of the most reputable SEO agencies out there.  And, they probably have the best design team among all agencies.

#5 – Hot Dish

If you haven’t checked out the Hot Dish website, you should.  It’s a beautiful site that really speaks to the franchising community as a whole.  Whether you’re in need of Consumer Development or Franchise Development SEO services, Hot Dish can help.  Hot Dish also has services that many other franchise marketing agencies don’t have under the guise of “Employer Development”.  People oftentimes forget that franchises are responsible for a major part of job hiring in the United States, as 10.5% of all businesses are franchises.

Franchise Consulting Services

When someone says that they offer “Franchise Consulting Services”, it could mean different things to different people.  Let’s walk through what the differences are between the various types of franchise consulting services.

#1 – Broker Networks

There is an army of franchise brokers out there.  I’m not exactly sure what the number is, but it’s probably somewhere around 20,000 people that are registered as franchise brokers or coaches.  Many franchise broker networks have 500+ active franchise brokers in there system.  The primary way that franchise brokers get paid is by making roughly $25,000 per deal that they sell.  So, they basically earn half of the franchise fee.

Usually, a single franchise broker represents several hundred brands that pay a fee to the franchise broker network.  So, in some ways, they don’t really care if they sell you Brand X or Brand Y because as long as you purchase some type of a franchise, they make their commission.  The key for franchise brokers is usually just to find people who want to open some type of a business and then help them decide which one to go with.

#2 – Franchise Consultants

Franchise Consultants traditionally has meant people that help you turn your business into a franchise.  But, more and more this term has become more vague and can also mean the same thing as “franchise broker”.  Usually a franchise consultant becomes more involved in working with the franchisor directly to help them improve their sales systems and processes, whereas a franchise broker oftentimes only interfaces with a franchisor when they are making an introduction to a candidate that is interested in that franchise brand.

#3 – Franchise Sales Organizations (FSOs)

Of these 3 types of “franchise consulting services”, FSOs are the most interesting to me.  FSOs basically get hired by franchisors to sell franchises for them.  Some of the fastest growing franchises in North America work with FSOs like Franchise Fast Lane, Rain Tree, and Franchise Evolution Partners.  We work with about 10 different FSOs, and most of them do a great job maximizing franchise growth for their franchisors.  We also provide FSO services for some of our clients, which has the added benefit of us not only driving the sales but also the leads so we can control what types of people are coming through the door in the first place.

Franchise Sales Organizations

Franchise Sales Organizations are one of the most innovative and interesting developments within the greater franchising industry.  Traditionally, franchisors would each hire their own in-house sales guy or sales team to process leads.  But, what many franchises have found is that if you hire the wrong sales guys or have turnover within your franchise development department, regardless of how great your actual franchise opportunity is, your franchise sales performance may be in jeopardy of greatly underperforming.

So, what many franchisors are now doing is saying to themselves, “I don’t really care who handles my franchise sales.  I just want to drive a lot of leads and a lot of deals, and whoever can perform the best in-house or outsourced gets the job.”

Where FSOs tend to greatly out perform in-house franchise guys is on doing the right things from a marketing perspective to drive enough leads to close more deals more often.  Let’s face it, it’s going to take somewhere between about 100-150 leads to close a franchising deal these days.  But, most franchise sales guys in-house are hesitant to ask for more funding to drive more franchise leads.  And, even when they do get approval to spend more money, they often times don’t know which keywords on Google Ads to spend more money on, what types of keywords they should be writing more content for SEO, how to drive more quality leads on Meta / Facebook / Instagram, or which portals are actually driving the highest quality leads today.

Because of this, it’s very easy for in-house sales reps to get stuck and no longer be able to increase the number of deals that they are closing each year.  And, it can sometimes be daunting to ask your CEO to drive another 200-400 leads per month, knowing how much work that will be for you to personally call that many people.  Or, you might be afraid that with more lead flow will come more sales reps who may end up taking you out of a job.

Long story short, it’s quite often a conflict of interest for an in-house sales guy to increase lead flow and sales.

Which Franchise Sales Organizations (FSOs) Are The Best?

While my opinion on this changes each year, currently my favorites are:

1. Lead PPC – While we used to just be a franchise marketing agency, we now offer FSO services.  And, the fact that we can control both the lead generation and sales side of things gives us a leg up on just about anybody.
2. Franchise Evolution Partners – I like these guys a lot.  They do a great job and aren’t overly expensive.
3. Franchise Fast Lane – Franchise Fast Lane has redefined what it means to be an FSO.  They have now sold close to $1B in franchise fees, which is insane.  Sadly, unless you are already one of their FSO clients, it’s very hard to get them to work with you, and their “Carpool” service can at times be lack luster for many franchisors.
4. Rain Tree – Rain Tree is a solid FSO.  We’ve worked with them on probably 50 accounts over the last decade, and we’re big fans of what they’re able to do.
5. Fran Dev Co – While a smaller FSO, Fran Dev Co is making many strides and has reasonable rates.
6. REP’M – Also a great FSO.

What Do Franchise Sales Organizations (FSOs) Do?

FSO Franchise

The term FSO Franchise or FSO in general means Franchise Sales Organization.  As more and more franchises appear, the need for companies that can sell franchises successfully at a high rate are becoming increasingly in higher demand.

Here at Lead PPC, we work with about 10 FSOs by providing quality franchise leads for the FSO companies to follow up with.  And, we also provide FSO services for some of our clients, meaning that we not only generate the leads via Google Ads and Meta Ads, but we also have a sales team that will follow up with those leads and sell the franchise opportunity on behalf of our clients.

Why Do FSO Franchise Sales Organizations Exist?

As franchise fees have rapidly increased from around $30,000 to now $50,000-$60,000 there is a lot more money on the table to pay high quality franchise sales reps and organizations to help you close more deals, especially when there is usually a trailing 5-7% of gross revenue piece that exists and fast growing franchises often get acquired by private equity companies.

All of these factors are driving emerging franchisors to outsource their franchise sales to other companies in order to help them grow more quickly.

How Much Do FSO Franchise Sales Organizations Charge?

The pricing for FSOs is all over the board.  But on the low end, expect to pay $5,000 / mo. per sales rep needed, which usually equates to about $5,000 / mo. per 300 leads because a single rep can usually only follow up with about 300 leads per month for any given brand.  On the high end, some FSOs charge up to around $15,000-$20,000 / mo. minimum to work with you.

On top of that, an FSO usually charges about 40-50% of the franchise fee, which usually equates to about $25,000 per sale.  If a broker network is involved, then you might only need to pay an additional 15-30% to the FSO for processing the lead.

Many FSOs now also charge around 1-1.5% of the gross revenue for generated.  So, if you’re charging your franchisees 6% of gross, you may have to pay 1/6 of that to your FSO, depending on which FSO you work with.

Other FSOs require that you sell them 10-50% of your company in order to engage with you.  All things considered, FSOs are typically worth their weight but that weight is expensive.

Franchise Sales Jobs

Finding Franchise Sales Jobs can be a roller coaster.  Selling franchises can be exhilarating, but figuring out where you personally fit into the greater franchising market can be a challenge.

Here are some options to consider once you’ve decided that you want to sell franchises:

Option #1: Become A Franchise Broker / Coach / Consultant

The vast majority of people who sell franchises are franchise consultants.  There are many franchise broker networks that have hundreds and hundreds of consultants, and most of them are franchises that you can join for a franchise fee of $50,000 – $100,000.  Some of our favorite franchise broker networks are:

• FranServe
• IFPG
• BAI
• FranNet
• TES
• FCC

Option #2: Get Hired By A Franchisor

Every year, we meet a few guys who work for various franchise brands that sell 50-100 units per year and get paid $10,000 – $25,000 per deal.  It’s not talked about much, but these types of employees make hundreds of thousands if not $1M+ per year.  On the flip side, for every 1 of these franchise sales jobs that exist, there are dozens of franchise development reps that work for brands that only close 1-5 deals per year and are on salary for only $4,000 – $5,000 / mo.

So, if you’re going to work for a franchisor, it’s best to work for one that is really slinging a lot of deals.  The great thing about working as a franchise sales rep is that typically the franchisor pays for all of the ads and leads, and you just have to follow up with them quickly and sell the prospective franchisees on the opportunity.

The one major downside of working for a franchisor directly is that you can get fired at any time, wiping out your entire income source.  And, finding a good replacement opportunity can be challenging.

Option #3: Work For An FSO

The nice thing about working for an FSO is that you typically follow with higher quality leads that are pre-paid for by the franchisor, yet you are usually working leads from 3-4 brands so you’re diversifying your portfolio of brands that you are selling.  In these types of situations, you’re usually also making about $10,000 – $15,000 per deal depending on the brand.  So, if you can have a base of $5,000 – $7,500 / mo. plus make another $20,000 – $40,000 / mo. by closing 2-4 deals, it’s a great way to go for a franchise sales job.
