There are various types of franchise SEO companies out there.  If you’re looking for a firm that can help drive SEO leads for your local franchised location, then 9th Root would be one to definitely consider.  We actually refer a lot of local franchise marketing to them because they’re just good at it.

A lot of what 9th Root focuses on is making sure that the WordPress url structure is setup properly for multi-location franchisors and then ensuring that the Google My Business setup is also correct.  Once that infrastructure is in place, it doesn’t matter whether you have 5 franchisees or 500 franchisees, you have a scalable solution that will drive a lot of free organic SEO leads for you and your franchisees.

#3 – Top Fire Media

I’d probably go with Top Fire Media next for franchise SEO services.  They are a company that we compete against some in the franchise marketing space.  But, they’re actually quite good at what they do.

Having looked at a decent amount of their work, one of the things that they do better than most franchise marketing agencies is that they are pretty good at Meta Ads PPC advertising for franchisors.  I wouldn’t say that their landing pages are all that great as often times they use the built-in Lead Ads functions, but some of their audience selection is impressive.

If you couple Meta Ads PPC franchise advertising along with some targeted franchise SEO services, then you’re probably in a good boat in general with Top Fire Media.  And, they’re not just a generic agency that says that they do franchise marketing.  They live and breathe it and they’re well known in the franchising industry.

#4 – Scorpion

I’m going to go with Scorpion as our #4 franchise SEO marketing company.  A few years back they purchased Wheat Creative, and they were at the time probably the #1 or #2 franchise SEO firm.  Although Scorpion works in a lot of different industries such as Dental, Law Firms, etc. they have a relatively large book of business within the franchising space, including SEO.

The thing about Scorpion to just be aware of going into it is that they do have a habit of doing 2 things that bug some customers:

1. Content Management System (CMS) – Scorpion has their own CMS that most of their clients use.  Their designs are REALLY REALLY GOOD.  But, if you ever want to leave their CMS and move to a platform like WordPress, it’s very difficult to do so.  From our perspective WordPress is the best SEO platform, so to not have your site built in WordPress is kind of a big deal.  Having said that, Scorpion has a ton of clients that do just fine using their in-house CMS.
2. Google Ads Accounts – Scorpion is notorious for not allowing customers to keep their Google Ads accounts.  At least in the past, many clients we have worked with were not able to get their Google Ads accounts back because multiple clients would share the same Google Ads accounts.  On the flip side, by running lots of clients out of the same Google Ads accounts, they do get a lower Cost Per Click and lower Cost Per Lead.  So, the strategy actually works, but some would say it’s against Google’s TOS and we hear a lot of clients that leave them get a bit bugged by it.

All things considered though, Scorpion is one of the most reputable SEO agencies out there.  And, they probably have the best design team among all agencies.

Franchise Consulting Services

When someone says that they offer “Franchise Consulting Services”, it could mean different things to different people.  Let’s walk through what the differences are between the various types of franchise consulting services.

#1 – Broker Networks

There is an army of franchise brokers out there.  I’m not exactly sure what the number is, but it’s probably somewhere around 20,000 people that are registered as franchise brokers or coaches.  Many franchise broker networks have 500+ active franchise brokers in there system.  The primary way that franchise brokers get paid is by making roughly $25,000 per deal that they sell.  So, they basically earn half of the franchise fee.

Usually, a single franchise broker represents several hundred brands that pay a fee to the franchise broker network.  So, in some ways, they don’t really care if they sell you Brand X or Brand Y because as long as you purchase some type of a franchise, they make their commission.  The key for franchise brokers is usually just to find people who want to open some type of a business and then help them decide which one to go with.

#2 – Franchise Consultants

Franchise Consultants traditionally has meant people that help you turn your business into a franchise.  But, more and more this term has become more vague and can also mean the same thing as “franchise broker”.  Usually a franchise consultant becomes more involved in working with the franchisor directly to help them improve their sales systems and processes, whereas a franchise broker oftentimes only interfaces with a franchisor when they are making an introduction to a candidate that is interested in that franchise brand.

#3 – Franchise Sales Organizations (FSOs)

Of these 3 types of “franchise consulting services”, FSOs are the most interesting to me.  FSOs basically get hired by franchisors to sell franchises for them.  Some of the fastest growing franchises in North America work with FSOs like Franchise Fast Lane, Rain Tree, and Franchise Evolution Partners.  We work with about 10 different FSOs, and most of them do a great job maximizing franchise growth for their franchisors.  We also provide FSO services for some of our clients, which has the added benefit of us not only driving the sales but also the leads so we can control what types of people are coming through the door in the first place.

Franchise Sales Organizations

Franchise Sales Organizations are one of the most innovative and interesting developments within the greater franchising industry.  Traditionally, franchisors would each hire their own in-house sales guy or sales team to process leads.  But, what many franchises have found is that if you hire the wrong sales guys or have turnover within your franchise development department, regardless of how great your actual franchise opportunity is, your franchise sales performance may be in jeopardy of greatly underperforming.

So, what many franchisors are now doing is saying to themselves, “I don’t really care who handles my franchise sales.  I just want to drive a lot of leads and a lot of deals, and whoever can perform the best in-house or outsourced gets the job.”

Where FSOs tend to greatly out perform in-house franchise guys is on doing the right things from a marketing perspective to drive enough leads to close more deals more often.  Let’s face it, it’s going to take somewhere between about 100-150 leads to close a franchising deal these days.  But, most franchise sales guys in-house are hesitant to ask for more funding to drive more franchise leads.  And, even when they do get approval to spend more money, they often times don’t know which keywords on Google Ads to spend more money on, what types of keywords they should be writing more content for SEO, how to drive more quality leads on Meta / Facebook / Instagram, or which portals are actually driving the highest quality leads today.

Because of this, it’s very easy for in-house sales reps to get stuck and no longer be able to increase the number of deals that they are closing each year.  And, it can sometimes be daunting to ask your CEO to drive another 200-400 leads per month, knowing how much work that will be for you to personally call that many people.  Or, you might be afraid that with more lead flow will come more sales reps who may end up taking you out of a job.

Long story short, it’s quite often a conflict of interest for an in-house sales guy to increase lead flow and sales.

Which Franchise Sales Organizations (FSOs) Are The Best?

While my opinion on this changes each year, currently my favorites are:

1. Lead PPC – While we used to just be a franchise marketing agency, we now offer FSO services.  And, the fact that we can control both the lead generation and sales side of things gives us a leg up on just about anybody.
2. Franchise Evolution Partners – I like these guys a lot.  They do a great job and aren’t overly expensive.
3. Franchise Fast Lane – Franchise Fast Lane has redefined what it means to be an FSO.  They have now sold close to $1B in franchise fees, which is insane.  Sadly, unless you are already one of their FSO clients, it’s very hard to get them to work with you, and their “Carpool” service can at times be lack luster for many franchisors.
4. Rain Tree – Rain Tree is a solid FSO.  We’ve worked with them on probably 50 accounts over the last decade, and we’re big fans of what they’re able to do.
5. Fran Dev Co – While a smaller FSO, Fran Dev Co is making many strides and has reasonable rates.
6. REP’M – Also a great FSO.

FSO Franchise

The term FSO Franchise or FSO in general means Franchise Sales Organization.  As more and more franchises appear, the need for companies that can sell franchises successfully at a high rate are becoming increasingly in higher demand.

Here at Lead PPC, we work with about 10 FSOs by providing quality franchise leads for the FSO companies to follow up with.  And, we also provide FSO services for some of our clients, meaning that we not only generate the leads via Google Ads and Meta Ads, but we also have a sales team that will follow up with those leads and sell the franchise opportunity on behalf of our clients.

Why Do FSO Franchise Sales Organizations Exist?

As franchise fees have rapidly increased from around $30,000 to now $50,000-$60,000 there is a lot more money on the table to pay high quality franchise sales reps and organizations to help you close more deals, especially when there is usually a trailing 5-7% of gross revenue piece that exists and fast growing franchises often get acquired by private equity companies.

All of these factors are driving emerging franchisors to outsource their franchise sales to other companies in order to help them grow more quickly.

How Much Do FSO Franchise Sales Organizations Charge?

The pricing for FSOs is all over the board.  But on the low end, expect to pay $5,000 / mo. per sales rep needed, which usually equates to about $5,000 / mo. per 300 leads because a single rep can usually only follow up with about 300 leads per month for any given brand.  On the high end, some FSOs charge up to around $15,000-$20,000 / mo. minimum to work with you.

On top of that, an FSO usually charges about 40-50% of the franchise fee, which usually equates to about $25,000 per sale.  If a broker network is involved, then you might only need to pay an additional 15-30% to the FSO for processing the lead.

Many FSOs now also charge around 1-1.5% of the gross revenue for generated.  So, if you’re charging your franchisees 6% of gross, you may have to pay 1/6 of that to your FSO, depending on which FSO you work with.

Other FSOs require that you sell them 10-50% of your company in order to engage with you.  All things considered, FSOs are typically worth their weight but that weight is expensive.

Franchise Sales Jobs

Finding Franchise Sales Jobs can be a roller coaster.  Selling franchises can be exhilarating, but figuring out where you personally fit into the greater franchising market can be a challenge.

Here are some options to consider once you’ve decided that you want to sell franchises:

Option #1: Become A Franchise Broker / Coach / Consultant

The vast majority of people who sell franchises are franchise consultants.  There are many franchise broker networks that have hundreds and hundreds of consultants, and most of them are franchises that you can join for a franchise fee of $50,000 – $100,000.  Some of our favorite franchise broker networks are:

• FranServe
• IFPG
• BAI
• FranNet
• TES
• FCC

Option #2: Get Hired By A Franchisor

Every year, we meet a few guys who work for various franchise brands that sell 50-100 units per year and get paid $10,000 – $25,000 per deal.  It’s not talked about much, but these types of employees make hundreds of thousands if not $1M+ per year.  On the flip side, for every 1 of these franchise sales jobs that exist, there are dozens of franchise development reps that work for brands that only close 1-5 deals per year and are on salary for only $4,000 – $5,000 / mo.

So, if you’re going to work for a franchisor, it’s best to work for one that is really slinging a lot of deals.  The great thing about working as a franchise sales rep is that typically the franchisor pays for all of the ads and leads, and you just have to follow up with them quickly and sell the prospective franchisees on the opportunity.

The one major downside of working for a franchisor directly is that you can get fired at any time, wiping out your entire income source.  And, finding a good replacement opportunity can be challenging.

Option #3: Work For An FSO

The nice thing about working for an FSO is that you typically follow with higher quality leads that are pre-paid for by the franchisor, yet you are usually working leads from 3-4 brands so you’re diversifying your portfolio of brands that you are selling.  In these types of situations, you’re usually also making about $10,000 – $15,000 per deal depending on the brand.  So, if you can have a base of $5,000 – $7,500 / mo. plus make another $20,000 – $40,000 / mo. by closing 2-4 deals, it’s a great way to go for a franchise sales job.

How To Conquer Startup Franchise Sales

Getting Startup Franchise Sales going can be such a massive pain and undertaking.  As a franchise advertising agency, we work with 100+ franchise brands, and we’ve been doing this for nearly 15 years.  As an FSO (Franchise Sales Organization), we also help a portion of our clients with their franchise sales.  It’s relatively easy to help a brand that is closing 1-3+ deals per month.  What’s challenging is when you have an emerging new franchisor that has few if any franchisees try to break trend and start closing a lot of deals.

Sadly, there is no “silver bullet” when it comes to franchise sales that solves of your franchise’s problems.  And, as you are probably aware, franchise sales especially startup franchise sales takes a certain amount of capital in order to drive enough quality franchise leads that you can can consistently close deals.  Plus, franchise sales reps aren’t super cheap.

Here are some tips that we’ve learned over the years that may help you on your quest to go from 0 to 60 with your franchise sales.

Tip #1: Start With SEO

SEO is the cheapest marketing thing you can do.  You should be publishing about 1 article per day primarily focused on keywords that contain the word “franchise” in them.  An example would be if you are a cookie franchisor, then you should go after terms like:

• cookie franchise – Such as “What’s The Best Cookie Franchise”
• dessert franchise – Such as “How To Identify The Best Cookie Franchise For You”

Time blocking can help significantly.  For myself, I have a 30 minute block of time set each day on my calendar to write articles.  In fact, the article that you are reading now is one of those articles.  Be consistent.  And, after you write the article, make sure to go to Google Search Console (shown below) and request that the article is indexed.

Franchise Sales CRM

Here at Lead PPC, we work with around 100 franchise brands doing franchise development lead generation, and we’ve been doing that for 14+ years.  We also are an FSO (Franchise Sales Organization), and we help sell franchises for some of our clients.  So, we have learned a thing or two about what makes a solid Franchise Sales CRM and which CRMs are not that great for selling franchises.

Some of our experience comes from dealing with systems integrations into the various Franchise Sales CRMs.  On the flip side, since we also help sell franchises, some CRMs are much better at helping you organize your information into an efficient process for closing franchise deals.

Here’s our take on what the top Franchise Sales CRMs are:

#1 – Salesforce

As an FSO, all of the clients that we work with are required to either purchase their own license of Salesforce or use ours for free.  The trick with Salesforce is that you want to try and avoid paying for multiple licenses.  As long as you have your franchise sales team share a single license, it’s pretty cheap in general at ~$100 / mo.  Salesforce is the most reputable and robust CRM on the marketplace.  What I personally like about it is that it’s very easy to setup reports that walk through stats on each of the major sales stages, which for our clients typically include things like:

• # Leads / Cost Per Lead
• # Introductions / Cost Per Introduction
• # FDDs Sent / Cost Per FDD Sent
• # Discovery Days / Cost Per Discovery Day
• # Sales / Cost Per Sale

You want to be able to view this data easily as it trends over the last day, week, month, and year.  And, you also want to be able to break out your primary lead sources such as:

• Google Ads Leads
• Meta Ads Leads
• Portal Leads
• Broker Network Leads

Salesforce allows you to quickly and easily do all of these things.

#2 – Zoho

If you’re looking for a cheaper solution for your Franchise Sales CRM needs, then Zoho would be one to take a look at.  It’s cheaper than Salesforce, and they have come a long way over the last 5 years to being at a similar level to Salesforce.

#3 – FranConnect

I do not like FranConnect at all, personally.  I don’t think it’s a true CRM, they don’t really have a true API ( you have to send leads through an parsing email address), and it’s just kind of a mediocre product.  Having said that, a TON of our clients use it.  And, it’s still probably the best franchise development specific CRM that there is.

#4 – Hubspot

I like everything about Hubspot except for:

• The Price
• Their Javascript Code

Hubspot is great.  It’d kind of like a mix of Marketing + Salesforce + Keap + Mail Chimp.  But, it’s just way too pricey for many emerging franchisors.  You’re better off using a Google Sheet and closing a few new franchise deals before looking at a solution like Hubspot.

My other complaint is that their javascript code is extremely annoying.  We’re constantly having to login to people’s Salesforce accounts to keep it from auto-predicting where leads came from and running its automation scripts.  For this reason, I prefer customers use FranConnect over Hubspot.  Even though FranConnect has a fraction of the capabilities of Hubspot, at least it doesn’t cause problems with tagging and automation when leads come through landing page platforms like Unbounce.

Outside of these 3 CRMs there are quite a few others such as:

• Pipedrive
• Keap

You’ve done the hard part.  You’ve created a local business that thrives.  Maybe it does $1-2M+ per year in revenue.  Perhaps it has profit margins of 20%+.  But, how do you take the concept that you’ve created and poured your blood, sweat, and tears into to get National Franchise Sales?

• FSOs – Also known as Franchise Sales Organizations, FSOs can be hired as a done-for-you solution for franchise sales.  It’s not cheap to do, but for between $5,000-$20,000 / mo. for a management fee along with 50% of your franchise fee (on non-broker network related sales), they will handle everything for you.
• Franchise PPC Companies – This is what we do here at Lead PPC.  We work with 85+ franchisors and drive leads for them via Google Ads and Meta Ads.  You should anticipate that you’ll need an ad budget of somewhere between $2,500-$7,500 / mo. depending on how aggressive you would like to be.
• Franchise Portals – These are websites like Franchise Gator, Franchise Direct, and Biz Buy Sell that you can purchase franchise leads from.
